Update on Asia Bibi



Has Asia Bibi been forgotten?

Asia Bibi, an impoverished 48-year-old farmer, was sentenced to death in 2010 after her neighbors accused her of insulting the prophet Muhammad. According to Bibi, she was involved in a dispute after some women laborers she was in the fields with said they would not drink water from the same bowl because she was not a Muslim. She said they slapped her and pulled her hair. They apparently later went to the police and accused her of making derogatory remarks about Islam's prophet.

Bibi's sentencing triggered an outcry among human rights groups and the international community. Pakistani rights organizations took up her case and campaigned for her release. Several Pakistani politicians also criticized Bibi's sentencing and imprisonment under the blasphemy laws.

But now Bibi's case seems all but forgotten. The media has stopped mentioning it, and the rights groups have ceased to follow it proactively.

"The attention of rights organizations got diverted to other cases of minorities' persecution," Zohra Yusuf, chairperson of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, told DW. "There have been several cases similar to Bibi's in the past two or three years."

The veteran human rights activist expressed her dissatisfaction over the human rights situation of religious minorities in Pakistan. "Prime Minister Sharif hosted a Christmas reception at the prime minister's house but it was part of the tokenism," Yusuf said, adding that the government needed to take steps to change the situation on ground.

But God has not forgotten Asia Bibi.

A&E has backed down. Duck Dynasty will return next spring - with the cast intact.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I have never seen the show. I will probably not watch it in the future. But at least extremist groups like GLAAD appear to have lost.

Christians should continue to love and pray for our enemies. But loving our enemies does not mean we lie on their behalf. We are all sinners - and I speak as an experienced sinner. At some point they need to hear the truth that homosexuality is wrong - even if it means they will hate us.

Don't duck the issue

OK - that's a bad pun. Pretty much everyone has heard about Duck Dynasty's Phil Robertson's comments about homosexuals not entering into the Kingdom of God, and the unhinged reaction to them from certain individuals and organizations that regard themselves as "tolerant". You can read the Robertson family's response here. (Disclaimer: I have never seen Duck Dynasty).

Frankly, this is just run-of-the-mill anti-Christian bigotry that is becoming more prevalent in the US secular media. As persecution goes, it does not match what many Christians face on a daily basis worldwide. However, I do have a few questions. I wonder how many of those who were angered by Robertson's comments believe in God, heaven and hell. If they do not, then why are they enraged that Robertson is saying that homosexuals will be condemned to a hell they do not think is real by a God they say is imaginary?

American Christian, be aware. Don't think the bigots won't come after you. Don't duck the issue. Pray without ceasing. Love those who hate you, but don't lie to them and say they are doing right when they are clearly not.

The Masihi Foundation continues to press for the release of Asia Bibi.

The dramatic report on Asia Bibi’s health, a Christian unjustly sentenced to death for blasphemy, was sent to the Federal Interior Ministry of Pakistan from the "Masihi Foundation", the non-governmental organization that deals with the woman’s legal and material assistance. The NGO, as reported to Fides, stresses how the "physical and mental condition of the woman is worsening" and the " necessity for her to have medical care in order to safeguard her physical and especially mental health which otherwise could be irreparably compromised". The NGO hopes that the Ministry takes immediate steps to protect Asia Bibi’s life and have a team of doctors to take care of her.

Consider the more prominent story of Aaiya Noreen Bibi, better known as Asia Bibi, the 43-year-old Catholic mother of five who was charged with blasphemy in Pakistan in 2009. Her crime? After picking berries in 100-degree heat, she was thirsty and drank water out of a local well. Upon doing so, local Muslim women blamed her for defiling the well and the conversation soon erupted into a dispute about Jesus and Muhammad. Although the conversation never turned violent, Bibi was arrested, charged, and sentenced to death by hanging. Since then her case has drawn much international criticism and her death sentence has not been carried out. Even so, she remains in solitary confinement and one Pakistani mullah has advertised a $10,000 reward for anyone who kills her. While this case has drawn widespread attention, it’s not an unfamiliar tale. According to the Pew Research Center, 47 percent of the countries in the world have laws or policies that criminalize blasphemy, apostasy, or defamation of religion. Given the treatment of Asia Bibi, it seems clear that even minor offenses can result in severe charges under these categories.

Bishop Mulinde and Asia Bibi are not outliers, and Allen’s engaging book provides dozens of similar profiles and anecdotes. What’s clear, however, is the persecution that he describes is not localized to any specific geographic area or toward Christians of a particular sect. This persecution is as widespread as it is discriminatory. According to the International Society for Human Rights, 80 percent of religious discrimination in the world is against Christians. Based on the annual report produced by Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, “Status of Global Mission,” more than 100,000 Christians were killed each year between 2000 and 2010—effectively, 11 Christians every hour. Since the time of Christ there have been 70 million Christian martyrs. More than half of those—45 million—lost their lives during the 20th century. In other words, there’s never been a more dangerous time to be a Christian than the present.

Gabriel's Horn is a mathematical oddity. It has a finite volume with an infinite surface area. Below is a Maple 16 plot of Gabriel's Horn:

Gabriel's Horn is formed by rotating the function f(x) = 1/x about the x-axis. The volume of Gabriel's Horn is a finite number and is calculated as follows:

V = ∫1 π 1/x2 dx = π

The surface area of Gabriel's Horn is tricker to calculate, but it turns out to be infinite:

S = ∫1 2π(1/x)√(1 + (1/x2)2) dx > ∫1 2π(1/x) dx = ∞

Thus, you have the strange result of an object that can be filled with a finite amount of paint, but requires an infinite amount to paint the outside surface!

Update on Asia Bibi



There is increased security for Asia Bibi after she has received new death threats.

Key quote:

The government of Punjab government beefed up security for 45-year-old Asia Bibi in Sheikhupura jail, where she is currently on death row, officials said.

The step was taken after authorities were alerted that a cleric had announced a bounty of Rs 30 million for any person who killed the woman.

Asia Bibi is also facing the threat of a suicide attack by the "Moaviya group", a militant organisation, The Express Tribune newspaper quoted its sources as saying. An intelligence report issued last week alerted authorities about this threat.

Aslam Pervaiz Sahotra, senior vice president of the Pakistan Christian Democratic Alliance, told PTI that a cleric named Maulana Muhammad Yousuf had announced the reward for anyone who killed Asia Bibi shortly after Governor Taseer met her in prison last year.

"Following this, the government directed the Jail Superintendent to ensure the safety of Asia Bibi by all means," Sahotra said.

The Scopes Trial

A summary of the case:
This month marks the 88th anniversary of the Scopes "Monkey" Trial, a famous legal case in 1925 in which a high school teacher, John Scopes, was accused of violating Tennessee's Butler Act, which made it unlawful to teach human evolution in any state-funded school.
The trial was the subject of a 1960 movie Inherit the Wind. According to some accounts the movie was never intended to be an accurate portrayal of the events of the Scopes trial*. As this article shows, that was something of an understatement. The real Scopes trial was far different from the hazy image of Christianity versus science that is relentlessly promoted by popular culture.

A few important quotes from the article:

When the Butler Act, a law which forbade the teaching of evolution in Tennessee's public schools, caught the attention of the ACLU they sent out a press release stating that they wanted to challenge the act in court. Dayton resident George Rappelyea, who was both a church goer and an adherent of evolution theory, saw an opportunity to garner some attention for the small mining town. After consulting with several town leaders, Rappelyea sent a telegram to the ACLU notifying the organization that they would provide the test case.

Although John T. Scopes was the plaintiff in the famous trial, he was not the regular biology teacher but a football coach who only taught the subject as a substitute. When Rappelyea approached him about being the 'sacrificial lamb' Scopes hesitantly agreed to go along with the PR stunt. Local prosecutors — who were also in on the plan — swore out a warrant for Scopes who was arrested and immediately released on bail pending trial.

The biology book that was used by Scopes was George William Hunter's Civic Biology. Although a standard biology text, it included the author's championing of eugenics and white supremacy, his contempt for people with disabilities, and his dislike of charity for the "inferior."

* - Supposedly Inherit the Wind was really an attack on "McCarthyism", which was (and still is) another name for anti-communism. But that explanation is worse, given what we know about the horrors of communism and the debunked myth of a 1950s anti-communist witch hunt. An anti-anti-communist film would be just like an anti-anti-Nazi or anti-anti-KKK film: an attempt to implicitly rationalize an ugly and inhuman monstrosity. It would be better from a public relations point of view to view Inherit the Wind as botched history rather than a defense of mass murder.

Planned Parenthood busted for fraud

Recently the state of Texas passed a law that outlawed abortion after 20 weeks, and also tightened health requirements for abortion facilities. Planned Parenthood responded by closing several of its facilities and wailing about how poor women would no longer have access to low cost reproductive health programs.

Planned Parenthood's complaints are without basis. The Texas Women's Health Program provides the services that Planned Parenthood and its defenders claim are no longer available to poor women.

Now comes news that Planned Parenthood has settles a case with the State of Texas. Planned Parenthood will pay $1.4 million because of fraudulent Medicaid billings it made.

Please pray to end the genocide of abortion.

As of 2004 over 10,000,000,000,000 non-trivial zeros have been calculated. All of them lie on the line Re(s) = 1/2; however, this does not constitute proof of the Riemann hypothesis. To date no one has been able to prove (or disprove) the Riemann hypothesis. A $1M prize has been offered to anyone who offers a valid proof one way or the other.

A victory over evil!

Recently, Texas passed a law that was aimed at improving the conditions at Texas abortion facilities. The new law also outlawed abortion after the 20th week of pregnancy.

Today, Planned Parenthood announced that it was closing three "clinics" in Texas. One of them is in my area.

Praise God for the end of the slaughter! Over 6000 babies had died at the hands of abortionists in this soon-to-be-closed facility.
